On Uganda’s border with Sudan lie the Kanangorok Hot Springs – a natural spring of jaw-dropping beauty set in an amazing, deserted area in the middle of the Kidepo Valley National Park. A visit to the hot spring will take you a full day and quite some travel, but the drive is as mesmerizing as it is exciting as it basically is a game drive! Initially, you drive past some fascinating Kidepo landscapes with small streams dotted with palms, acacia trees and savannah, and you might spot animals such as giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, greater kudus, lions and leopards along the way. Once close to the hot spring, an armed guide leads you on foot to the hot spring itself in a challenging walk that leads through long grasses and thorny bushes.
It’s worth the trouble, however, as you will be amazed by the views over the outstretched grassy plains and surrounding mountain ranges, and of course the sight of the 50°C water flowing between dark-coloured rocks (kanangorok meaning a place of black stones). The crystal clear and steaming spring water is said to have healing powers, and locals from near and far regularly visit the place to honour their ancestors and appease the spirits. Some even bathe in the water in an attempt to cure several ailments, but this is not recommended (!). Instead, take your spot, sit down, and take in the amazing surroundings while enjoying a lovely packed lunch.
