Want some adventure during your stay at the coast? The Nguuni Nature Sanctuary is a beautiful park at a 10 minute drive from Bamburi beach. It is home to giraffes, antelopes, ostriches, impalas, oryxes, elands and over 250 bird species.
Woodlands, wetlands and savannah grasslands are the main landscapes here which allow many species to thrive in their natural habitat. But Nguuni Sanctuary is not just a conservation site, it’s also a successful rehabilitation project: this land used to be inhabitable and infertile due to previous mining activity. Dr Haller, a Swiss environmentalist, made it into a successful environmental restoration project in the 1970s. Eventually this led to three nature parks, of which the Nguuni Sanctuary is one.
At Nguuni you can go hiking, do a game drive, or ride your bike. Remember that you are trekking through the African wilderness, so wear suitable trousers and shoes and don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent. A game drive through the sanctuary gives you a good overview of the area; tall doum palms topped by leopard orchids are scattered across the grasslands. If you feel adventurous, it’s also possible to hand feed giraffes.
Around sunset you can light your bonfire – take some drinks, snacks and of course marshmallows and enjoy the end of the day surrounded by enthralling scenery as you watch the sun set behind the mesmerising Nguu Tatu Hills.
