Lake Naivasha is perfect for those who want to get out of their safari jeep for a bit. Hop on a boat for a safari in between groups of hippos and flamingos, and drop at Crescent Island for an amazing safari on foot!
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake of 139 square kilometers in size. It lies at an altitude of 1,884 meters which makes it the highest lake within the Great Rift Valley. The landscape on the shore is varied. Huge swamps filled with papyrus plants can be found on one side, dense forrest and Crescent Island on another and the rock formations of Hell’s Gate are located at the south part of the lake.
The lake offers great opportunities for a unique boat safari, where you get to see many animals while sitting in your boat: you might pass huge groups of hippos and flamingos on the water, while seeing eagles and cormorants flying high above you and giraffes and buffalos on the shore. The boat safari takes about 90 minutes and is usually done on a small motorised boat with life vests for all passengers. The trip ends on Crescent Island, where you continue with a walking safari.
According to some Crescent Island is Naivasha’s best kept secret. They say it’s one of the most beautiful parks in Kenya where it’s easy to spot all sorts of wildlife. Even more so when you are on foot…! The hippos in the lake can be spotted easily from the island, as well as the zebras, giraffes, impalas and buffalos on the island itself. Bird lovers won’t be disappointed either, with fish eagles, herons, ospreys, black crakes, lily-trotters and many other birds filling the skies and the shores of the island.
